Riddrie is a north-eastern suburb of Glasgow, Scotland. It lies on the A80 Cumbernauld Road.
Riddrie is a residential area mainly consisting of 1920s to 30sdetached houses, originally built as council housing but now largely privately owned. The former Monkland Canal to the north was filled in the 1960s and is now the M8 motorway the main road for Glasgow to Edinburgh.
Riddrie is the location of Barlinnie Jail Prison.Artist Alasdair Gray grew up in Riddrie and the "Thaw" sections of his novel Lanark loosely document his early life there.
The Roman Catholic Bishop of Paisley Philip Tartaglia was brought up in Riddrie and educated at St Thomas' Primary School in the area. |
